On Thursday morning, a 4.8-magnitude quake also struck 47 miles southeast of San Antonio, Texas, an uncommon occurrence in the state.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.0, struck the San Francisco Bay area in the early afternoon on Thursday, ironically occurring just hours after 8.6 million people reportedly participated in the 2011 Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Though they are a somewhat rare event, do these recent earthquakes really indicate the world will end today?</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">When Camping foretold Judgment Day would come on May 21, he said it would begin with a series of destructive earthquakes that would occur in each of the world's time zones. Although an Icelandic volcano eruption and a few earthquakes – in northern California and New Zealand – did occur that day, the damage wasn't convincing and the Rapture never came.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Camping revised his forecasting after the day came and went, saying May 21 was indeed the beginning of a five month “day” of judgment and a spiritual rapture had occurred. Oct. 21 was the new date he set for the physical Rapture to take place.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">An article on Family Radio's website titled “What Happened On May 21?” says the incorrect prediction for May was caused, in part, by a misunderstanding of the word “earthquake.” The article points to the Genesis account of God’s creation of Adam from the dust of the earth as a explanation for what happened, or didn't happen, in May.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">“Therefore we have learned from our experience of last May 21 what actually happened,” the article says. “All of mankind was shaken with fear. Indeed the earth (or mankind) did quake in a way it had never before been shaken. God had come&nbsp; in an ghostlike way to bring judgment upon the whole world.”</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Will Graham, the oldest son of Franklin Graham and grandson of Billy Graham, spoke with The Christian Post after Camping's rapture prediction didn't materialize earlier this year, making it clear that Judgment Day should be taken seriously but its date cannot be accurately predicted.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">"Harold couldn't be more right. The end of the world is coming," Graham said. "We just don't know the time of it. From his cypher, he was off. The genre emerged in Chicago during the Great Migration when Thomas Andrew Dorsey brought all of his experience as a former "bluesman" to bear on its development. Now considered the "father of black gospel," Dorsey had been the piano player for "Ma" Rainey's Georgia Jazz band until a dramatic conversion experience in the late 1920s. His innovation, "Gospel Blues," merely joined sacred lyrics to Blues chord structures. Dorsey had come to reject the lifestyle of the bluesman, but he did not reject the blues. Indeed, he maintained that the emotionally evocative nature of the blues could be of tremendous service to church music, working toward the "same feeling." As a result, however, Dorsey and a number of other early gospel performers were thrown out of some of the most established black churches in the country. What is now widely recognized as the "classic" sound of black gospel was once just as widely considered to be the "Devil's music."</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The lives of gospel performers have reflected the fact that black gospel was born in tension between the sacred and the secular, the church and the world, human passions and spiritual inclinations. Even some of the most revered figures within the tradition lead complicated lives that were often marked as much by materialism, self- interest, contradiction and competition as by the desire to spread the "good news." During the height of black gospel's popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, many gospel singers such as Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Marion Williams and Clara Ward amassed modest fortunes and took great pride in displaying their material wealth in the form of expensive cars, fur coats, lavish homes and furnishings. When Clara Ward dramatically cast her Mink wrap at Mahalia Jackson's coffin during Jackson's funeral in 1972, it was possibly a gesture of respect for the departed "Queen of Gospel," but it</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">was without question a display of Ward's material prosperity. As Semple, the wise and sardonic Langston Hughes character, observed, "Some gospel singers these days are making so much money, when you hear them crying, 'I cannot bear my burden alone,' what they really mean is, 'help me get my cross to my Cadillac.'"</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The seeming contradiction between the message of black gospel and the lives of many gospel singers became an enormous issue on the "gospel highway" between the 1950s and 1970s, effectively splitting gospel singers into two camps, "ministers" and "performers." It also may account for the popularity of Dorsey's tune, "I've Got to Live the Life I Sing about in My Songs," made famous, perhaps ironically, by Mahalia Jackson.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Gospel singers of the past were not saints and their lives did not always conform, privately or publicly, to conventional standards of Christian piety. The same can be said for today's crop of black gospel singers whose personal presentation and public performances seem a direct response to market demands and the result of their commercial success. (Gospel music is a multi-million dollar industry.) Their lives are just as fraught with complications, apparent compromise and contradictions as their predecessors. The gospel road has always been a hard road. Failing to navigate its bumps, twists and turns can cost you something professionally and personally. Tonéx (aka Anthony Williams), the gospel artist who came out as gay in 2007 could certainly attest to that.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Even more so than the complexities of the gospel life, however, what links these performers across the generations is the glorious music itself. Black gospel music is America's finest creation, the soundtrack of this nation. It is a genre of music that has been able to articulate all the hopes, fears, trials and triumphs of the human spirit, as well as express our salvific anticipation of that heavenly tomorrow. And most of these gospel singers can really sing it too! Think Yolanda Adams, Smokie Norful, the Clark Sisters, Mary Mary, Shirley Caesar and all the Winans. It’s from Mike Horton’s new book The Christian Faith:</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the Reformed tradition, the law-gospel distinction was interpreted within the historical context of distinct covenants in history. The covenant of creation (also called the covenant of works or law) was based on the personal performance of all righteousness by the covenant servant. The covenant of grace is based on the fulfillment of all righteousness by our representative head and is dispensed to the covenant people through faith in him. There is still law in the covenant of grace. However, it is no longer able to condemn believers but directs them in lives of gratitude for God’s mercy in Christ.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As I’ve said here before, the commands in the Bible are like a set of railroad tracks. The tracks provide no power for the train but the train must stay on the tracks in order to function. The law, in other words, never gives any power to do what it commands. It shows us what a sanctified life looks like but it has no sanctifying power. Only the <a href="http://www.christianpost.com/news/horton-on-the-law-and-the-gospel-49093/">gospel</a> has power, as it were, to move the train. Inspired by melisma-mad stars like Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, and scads of "American Idol," vocalists treat musical phrases like elastic, stretching each into so many syllables they could fill a page.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All this makes the highly selective approach of Lizz Wright even more striking. Though the singer draws from the genres that encourage the greatest vocal ornamentation — R&amp;B, jazz and gospel — her phrasing remains spare.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"I let the song guide me," Wright says. "I move through the space that I'm given, rather than trying to make an impression on the material. It draws heavily from the genre most associated with bright-colored notes and to-the-rafters power: gospel. While Wright finds great vocal strength in hymnal songs like "Glory Glory," she rarely ventures into Mahalia Jackson territory.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"A couple of moments go there," Wright says. "But if everything had hot sauce on it, it would miss perspective — and depth."</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Wright had an abiding reason to integrate more gospel into her usual mix of soul, folk, blues, R&amp;B and jazz. She grew up the daughter of a minister of a local church in the small town of Hihira, Georgia. From childhood, Wright sang gospel standards, like the ones on the new CD. Her return to that sound began two years ago, when she moved back down south (to Hendersonville, North Carolina) after having lived in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"I had a slamming apartment," she says. "It had a lot of space and light. But it just made me yearn for a house with some earth where I could plant things and grow my own food."</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Moving back near her family inspired in Wright "a strong desire to show my elders that I was holding on to what they had given me. I wanted the 'grands' and 'greats' to know that I understood the value of it."</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">While gospel serves as the CD's linchpin, the disc also features a range of styles, including covers of classic-rock touchstones like Blind Faith's "Presence of the Lord" and Hendrix's "In From The Storm," as well as African influenced pieces written with Angelique Kidjo.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The accent on covers contrasts Wright's previous CD, 2008's "The Orchard," which stressed original pieces for the first time. Blame budget-mandated time constraints.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"In order to move quickly, and feel good about it, I went to places that had history," she says.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Wright's own history has confused some people. Because she records for Verve, and has covered material by the likes of Chick Corea, she got slotted as a jazz singer. But she qualifies only to the degree that Norah Jones does. His deep desire to follow the Lord’s leading led him to Baptist Bible College where he graduated in 1992. That same year he and his wife, Yleen (Neely) whom he had met at Sheltering Heights Bible Camp in 1973 and married in 1975, were approved as missionaries by the Baptist Bible Fellowship, which led to their relocation to England in 1994.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">They assisted Tom and Gail Gritts in Wolverhampton, England at the Temple Baptist Church from 1994 to1996. Later, they started the Hill Top Bible Baptist Church in Hednesford, England and pastored there from 1997 to 1999.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Prior to traveling to England, Hartwell had been employed by his family construction business, owned by his father, Clifford Hartwell. He worked for the company from the time that he graduated from Marshfield High School in 1974 until 1990.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Throughout his lifetime, Hartwell had been involved in singing gospel music. He often sang specials at church and always enjoyed singing with his family at home.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In 1985 he became a part of the Glory Bound Quartet from Marshfield and they traveled together until 1988. In 2006, he was invited to join the Ascension Quartet and they have taken their ministry across the country, including singing on a southern gospel music cruise and at Silver Dollar City.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“I really enjoy singing,” he said. “My life’s dream has been to continue to sing southern gospel music, presenting the gospel in song for the glory of God and eventually sing full-time.”</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After returning to America from the mission field with his family, including children, Nicholas and Jennifer, Hartwell began to work in maintenance at Central Bible College in Springfield.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hartwell has taken his talent and ministry far from the Elkland community where he was raised and attended grade school in rural Webster County.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He has sung for congregations not only in his home state but in congregations across the United States.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“I really enjoy being on the road with the guys,” he said. “It is always an honor to present the gospel.”</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When not found out on the road, Hartwell volunteers as a firefighter, first responder and CPR instructor for the Elkland Fire Protection District.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hartwell has been involved with the department since its beginning in the 1980s. He has also been active in the Awana’s at the Bible Baptist Church in Buffalo.</span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hartwell recently had an operation for an injury to his shoulder. A benefit is being planned by the Elkland Independent Methodist Church for him and his family.
